How to disable chat in Microsoft Teams

Sometimes you might want to disable chat in Microsoft Teams meeting because you need everyone to focus on what you are talking or sharing on the screen rather than the chat. How to disable chat in Microsoft Teams before the meeting starts

Go to the calendar

Click on the event, then select Edit

From the menu bar, select Meeting Options

On the Meeting Options page, set “Allow Meeting Chat” to Disable, and then click Save.

From now on, everyone who joins the meeting will no longer be able to use the chat.


How to turn off chat after meeting is over before the meeting starts

Go to the calendar

Click on the event, then select Edit

From the menu bar, select Meeting Options

On the Meeting Options page, set “Allow Meeting Chat” to In-meeting only, and then click Save.

Now, once the meeting is over, no one will be able to use the chat section.


How to disallow chat in Microsoft Teams during a meeting

Click on the 3 dots at the top to open the menu

Choose Meeting options

In Allow meeting chat, click the drop-down menu, and then select disabled.

Click save to apply the change.

When you return to the meeting you will see in the chat section “chat is turned off for this meeting”.

Click on the three dots at the top to open the menu

Choose Meeting options

In Allow meeting chat, click the drop-down menu, and then select In-meeting only.

Click save to apply the change.

Anyone can chat in the meeting, but as soon as the meeting ends, the chat will be closed.
