The error message “unable to find the proxy server” is a common error in Firefox and the Tor browser. I have seen this error several times after updating the Tor browser. If you see this error in your Tor browser, the first thing to do is to check if the proxy configuration is correctly configured to access the Tor network.

How To Change Proxy Settings In Tor Browser

Open the Tor Browser.

At the top right, click on the three lines to access the menu.

Click on Options

On the left side, select Advanced.

Choose the Network tab, then select Settings in the connection area.

In the connection settings window, select manual proxy configuration.

In the socks host, type 127.0.0.1 and in the port type 9050

Choose socks v5

Scroll down and check “Proxy DNS when using SOCKS v5“.

Click OK to close the Connection Settings window.

To see the changes, close and reopen the Tor browser.


When the Tor browser has finished restarting, visit a working website to confirm that the Tor browser is working correctly.
